Chanel’s Métiers d’Art collections find a very special place in the fashion calendar. It’s an annual affair that takes place every December against breath-taking backdrops across the globe. Hamburg. New York. Paris. Mumbai. This year, Virginie Viard took the collection to the Château de Chenonceau in France’s Loire Valley. For obvious Miss Rona-related reasons, Kristen Stewart was the show’s singular attendee.
The historic castle was fitting grounds for the Métiers d’Art showcase in more ways than one. For one, the Chenonceau was ruled by powerful women, some of whom have been the point of inspiration for Gabrielle Chanel’s collections. Secondly, the showcase of craftsmanship so deeply entrenched in the house’s heritage no doubt called for a setting of such grandeur. And Viard’s collection itself was a fairytale, no less.
Ruffled collars lent a royal flair to jackets, tiered skirts and castle motifs embroidered in colourful rhinestones on cummberbands evoked a sense of regal panache. Viard’s nod to the Renaissance rulers was sprinkled throughout the collection’s lineup – some apparent at first glance, and other fleeting moments that take a keen eye for detail to notice.
